Shockwave Therapy works by:

  • Stimulating fibroblast activity (collagen production) – healing connective tissues, such as ligaments, tendons, and fascia

  • Stimulating osteoblast (bone cell) production – healing bone

  • Reducing ‘substance P’ within the tissues for pain relief

  • Inhibiting Cox II Enzyme, causing an anti-inflammatory effect

  • Increasing circulation to the affected area

  • Breaking down hardened deposits and scar tissue formation

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a type of non-surgical treatment that is used for soft tissue musculoskeletal conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, hip bursitis and tight musculature. It is a treatment whereby a handheld probe is positioned over the treatment area, delivering high energy acoustic sound waves which promote and stimulate tissue regeneration, increase in blood flow and stimulation of cells. The evidence shows that ESWT is highly effective as a multimodal treatment in combination with other therapies.

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY USED FOR?

Shockwave therapy is used for a variety of different pathologies with some including:

  • Plantarfasciitis

  • Achilles Tendonitis

  • Tendinopathies

  • Morton's neuroma

  • Retrocalcaneal Bursitis

  • Shin Splints

  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome/Anterior knee pain

HOW MANY SESSIONS OF SHOCKWAVE IS RECOMMENDED?

Evidence shows that between 5-7 shockwave therapy sessions is recommended for soft tissue injuries such as platarfasciitis, this may vary depending on the severity of the injury. Each session is between 4-7 days apart, this also varies from person to person.

HOW DO I KNOW IF SHOCKWAVE IS SUITABLE FOR ME?

At Hip to Sole Podiatry, we pride ourselves in providing comprehensive biomechanical and injury assessments that will give us full insight into the nature of the injury and its potential contributing factors. This allows us to form a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the root cause of injury.
