Dry Needling as an Adjunct Therapy for Soft Tissue Injuries: What is it and how is it used?

Do you currently have painful and tight muscles, or have you sustained an injury that is taking a while to heal? Dry needling may be the adjunct therapy you may need.

Have you ever wondered what dry needling does and how it functions? The use of needles to treat tight and aching muscles has been around since 1979! Believe it or not, dry needling is very different to acupuncture needles, whilst Chinese medicine practitioners work with meridians to restore "Qi" or balance in the body, dry needling works differently. The needles are inserted into hyperirritable and taut bands of muscle, also called a trigger point!

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific muscle areas, known as trigger points, without injecting any substances—hence the term "dry." These trigger points are hyperirritable spots within muscle fibers that can cause localized pain and potentially refer pain to other areas of the body. The goal of dry needling is to release tension in these trigger points, promote blood flow, and accelerate the healing process.

How does Dry Needling work and what is the science behind it?

In a podiatric context, dry needling is used to address issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and other lower limb muscle or tendon problems and injuries. The process begins with a thorough evaluation by your podiatrist called a biomechanical and alignment assessment. They will assess your symptoms, physical condition, and any specific trigger points in the lower limbs that are contributing to your discomfort.

During the treatment, the podiatrist inserts a needle into the identified trigger points within the muscle or tendon. This can cause a momentary sensation ranging from mild discomfort to a sharp pang. The needle’s insertion often triggers a muscle twitch response, signaling the release of tension and helping to alleviate pain. This response can be followed by improved function and reduced muscle tightness.

What injuries and conditions can we treat with dry needling?

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Turf toe injuries

  • Knee injuries and strains: arthritic knees, ACL, PCL and meniscus injuries

  • Hip bursitis and hip pain

  • Calf pain and strains

Can dry needling help me perform better?

Dry needling is excellent for muscle rehabilitation, especially in athletes and active individuals involved in sports! Dry needling aids in muscle recovery, improved flexibility and reduces pain so that you can perform better in your athletic performance and/or sports that you enjoy!

How do I book for a dry needling assessment and treatment?
