Orthotic therapy is used to manage a wide range of lower limb issues. The current evidence shows that orthotics can redistribute pressure and load onto the feet, producing positive neurofeedback and reduced pain.

What are some of the conditions orthotics are prescribed for?

  • Flat feet and high arch feet

  • Soft tissue injuries: Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy

  • Neuromas and Bursitis

  • Malalignment issues: limb length discrepancies, scoliosis

How is an orthotic prescribed?

A biomechanical assessment is conducted by your podiatrist to determine the root cause of your lower limb issue. Once a diagnosis is formed, your podiatrist will assess whether orthotics are a suitable treatment option for your condition. If orthotics are part of your treatment plan, a cast is taken of both feet to make a custom made orthotic specific to your needs.

 

How often do orthotics need to be replaced?

Depending on your specific needs, your podiatrist will recommend a suitable replacement period for your orthotics. Most orthotics last approximately 12 months and need to be replaced for best results annually.

 

What types of orthotics are there?

There are different types of orthotics, the two main types include prefabricated orthotics and custom orthotics. Custom orthotics are specifically made to your come in 3/4, full length, sports style and children's orthotics.

Are orthotics covered by health funds?

Depending on the type of health fund you have, you may be eligible for coverage on orthotics. You can contact your health fund and check if you are have coverage for orthotics.
